The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has scheduled the 2026 International Roadcheck for May 12–14.
During this 72-hour high-visibility event, North American enforcement will focus heavily on ELD tampering, logbook violations, and record manipulation.
For drivers crossing the Sierra Nevada on I-80, the Donner Pass Weigh Station and Inspection Facility near Truckee, CA, will be a primary enforcement point.
CVSA 2026: The Crackdown on ELD Tampering
For the 2026 International Roadcheck, the CVSA has designated ELD tampering as a top priority for driver inspections.
This means inspectors will look beyond simple "Form and Manner" errors. They are hunting for signs of record manipulation or intentional software overrides designed to hide driving time.
Falsifying logs is often charged as a misdemeanor in California.
While not a "serious offense" in the traditional sense at the DOT FMCSA, a criminal conviction can be much worse. It could create a permanent record that many carriers simply will not overlook during the hiring process.
What to Expect at the Donner Pass Facility
Inspectors at the Donner Pass facility on I-80 perform thousands of checks annually to ensure Hours of Service (HOS) compliance for truckers and charter bus drivers.
During the May blitz, they will verify that every second of operation is accounted for. They compare ELD data with supporting documents like fuel receipts and GPS timestamps to spot inconsistencies.
However, the 2026 focus does not mean they will ignore other issues. Drivers should expect a full Level I North American Standard Inspection.
“During International Roadcheck, inspectors at weigh/inspection stations and pop-up inspection sites primarily conduct the North American Standard Level I Inspection, a 37-step procedure that includes two major parts – an examination of the driver’s operating requirements and an assessment of the vehicle’s mechanical fitness.”—CVSA.org.
A Level I inspection includes checking CDL compliance, medical certificates, and even English proficiency. Your vehicle will also undergo a rigorous mechanical evaluation of brakes, tires, and cargo securement.
The Risk of a Misdemeanor in Nevada County, CA
A ticket for logbook violations or ELD tampering at the Truckee scales typically leads to a court date in the Nevada County Superior Court.
Because these are often charged as misdemeanors, the stakes involve more than just a fine. You are facing jail time or probation, a massive fine, and a potential criminal record that could end your professional driving career.
“A misdemeanor is a type of offense punishable under criminal law. A misdemeanor is typically a crime punishable by less than 12 months in jail.”—Cornell Law School Legal Information Institute (LII) WEX Definitions: Misdemeanor.
Bigger & Harman has spent over a decade defending CDL holders against these allegations. We evaluate possible or potential results for your specific situation. We work to have charges dismissed or reduced to keep a criminal conviction off your record and drivers out of county jail.
Preparing for the International Roadcheck
To avoid being placed out-of-service (OOS) at the Truckee weigh station, ensure your ELD is working properly and that the manufacturer is on the DOT’s Registered Device List (dozens have been removed since the start of 2026), or that you have the required backup paper logs. Any sign of intentional manipulation will trigger immediate enforcement action.
Review your HOS compliance, shipping documents, and ensure your cargo is immobilized and secured.
If you are cited, remain professional and sign the ticket. Remember, your signature is only a promise to resolve the ticket or appear in the Truckee Courthouse. It is not a confession or admission of guilt. If you do not sign, you might need to post bail before you can continue driving.
Contact a CDL traffic attorney to discuss your options before you pay a fine.
