Authorities report that a familiar scam is once again making the rounds among the state’s elderly population in Fresno, Bakersfield and some other urban areas.
The callers identify themselves as representatives of a local court. They then claim that the targeted person’s relative, such as a granddaughter or nephew, is facing arrest for outstanding traffic ticket warrants, and they demand a sum of money.
These calls are always fake. Never, ever send money in response to a phone call. More importantly, always try to get the caller’s name and address, and forward this information to the Elder Abuse Unit at your local police department. To get this information, you may need to be an actor. Say something like “I’ll gladly send the money if you give me your name and address.”
Disposing of Tickets
If you do have outstanding traffic tickets, consider hiring an attorney. It may sound expensive, but it’s oftentimes much cheaper than handling your tickets on your own and ending up with penny wise and pound foolish result. An attorney can appear in court without you having to be there.
At that appearance, one of two things happens:
- Plea Bargain: The defendant’s attorney will negotiate with prosecutors to reduce the punishment or the charges. Plea-bargaining is not a sign of weakness; rather, it exemplifies the old adage that “a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.”
- Trial: If a favorable plea bargain cannot be worked out, for whatever reason, the trial takes place before the judge. The prosecutor must prove that the defendant is guilty beyond any reasonable doubt.
A not guilty verdict or a negotiated agreement can save you big money on your insurance and save you from undesirable consequences to your license or employment. Talk to an attorney today.
