To dispute a stop sign ticket, the driver needs a solid legal plan.
We understand the stress of facing a citation in Kings County. Our team talks to you like a neighbor to find the best path forward.
What the Law Requires
CA Vehicle Code (VC) Section 22450, Special Stops Required mandates these rules for every driver.
It states, “(a) The driver of any vehicle approaching a stop sign at the entrance to, or within, an intersection shall stop at a limit line…” This means a full stop is mandatory. The driver must stop before the white limit line or the crosswalk, or face a stop sign ticket.
As members of the CA Traffic Defense Bar Association, we have heard the stories from other members and seen how the testimony has played out in court on our own cases.
Issues at Local Intersections
Officers often watch busy spots like 11th Avenue and Fargo Avenue. Drivers traveling on Fargo Avenue must yield to the cross-traffic on 11th Avenue. Because 11th Avenue is a main thoroughfare, an officer may monitor this spot to ensure motorists don't "roll" into the path of oncoming traffic.
Another intersection in Hanford where stop sign tickets are most frequently issued is the corner of Douty Street and 7th Street, a busy four-way stop located near the downtown area.
At these and many other intersections, an officer’s line of sight is everything. If a driver stops behind the limit line, but the officer is parked at an angle where they can only see the front bumper, they might mistakenly issue a ticket.
Faded limit lines are a common problem across California. If the line is invisible, a motorist may have a strong defense.
If a driver receives a ticket, we recommend documenting the scene immediately. Photos of the limit lines and any obstructions can be vital evidence when we dispute a stop sign ticket in the Hanford Courthouse.
Understanding Traffic School Limits
Traffic school is not always the best financial choice for a driver. A driver cannot use it if they attended within the last 18 months. There are many eligibility requirements, like the classification of vehicle you are driving. One of the great mistakes is pleading guilty by paying the fine amount first without consulting legal counsel.
Drivers should consult a traffic ticket attorney prior to deciding to use the traffic school mulligan. Using it for a second ticket is often a waste of money, unless they dispute and win one of the tickets.
California traffic tickets are already very expensive for most local families. We help motorists decide if fighting the ticket is the better option. This can prevent a point from hitting a driving record and raising their auto insurance premiums.
The average Hanford driver will pay $2,571 in 2026 for full coverage auto insurance. The paid fine for a minor infraction, like a stop sign ticket, could raise their premium by 30% when they lose their “good driver’s discount.”
That higher premium could cost $771 annually for up to 3 years, or a total of $2,313.
Certainly, a traffic attorney would cost much less.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Section
Q: Do I really have to go to court to dispute a stop sign ticket?
A: Unless there is a compelling reason, such as calling you as a witness, Bigger & Harman does not require the driver to appear. They can go to work or school while we resolve their ticket.
Q: Is a "rolling stop" or “California stop” legal if no other cars are present?
A: No, a rolling stop is never legal under California law. A driver must come to a complete stop, regardless of traffic.
Q: Will I save money if I dispute a stop sign ticket in court rather than paying the fine?
A: Not necessarily. There are no guarantees. Bigger & Harman will not dispute your ticket just to gain you as a client. However, winning helps the driver avoid the fine and a significant insurance hike. This usually saves thousands of dollars over those three years.
