Commercial drivers traveling I-80 through Truckee, CA, should expect increased enforcement and CHP or CVSA inspection violations associated with Brake Safety Week from August 23–29, 2026.
For many CDL holders hauling freight across the Donner Pass, the stretch of I-80 near the Truckee Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Facility (CVEF) is already one of California’s most heavily monitored trucking corridors.
“…inspectors will focus on drums and rotors, the emphasis for this year’s brake-safety initiative. Brake drum and rotor issues may affect a vehicle’s brake efficiency. Broken pieces of drums and rotors may become dislodged from the vehicle en route and damage other vehicles or result in injuries or fatalities to the motoring public.”—The CVSA.org website.
During Brake Safety Week, inspectors will pay even closer attention to brake systems, maintenance records, and possible Out-of-Service (OOS) Orders.
Understanding CVSA Inspection Violations During Brake Safety Week
The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) conducts Brake Safety Week each year throughout North America to identify unsafe commercial vehicles before mechanical failures contribute to serious collisions.
Commercial drivers traveling I-80 across the Donner Pass near the Truckee CVEF may notice additional inspections and roadside enforcement activity.
According to the CVSA Brake Safety Campaigns program:
“Brake-related violations comprise the largest percentage of all out-of-service violations cited during roadside inspections. Improperly installed or poorly maintained brake systems can reduce the braking capacity and stopping distance of trucks and buses, which poses a serious risk to driver and public safety.”
CVSA has also reported that brake defects contribute to nearly 30% of truck crashes and 53% of rear-end commercial vehicle collisions.
Why OOS Orders Matter to a Commercial Driver
Many commercial drivers do not realize how serious CVSA inspection violations can become until an inspection is complete.
If inspectors determine that 20% or more of a vehicle’s service brakes are defective, the vehicle will be placed under an OOS Order immediately. The truck cannot legally move until repairs have been completed.
Delivery schedules, customer commitments, and freight operations can quickly be disrupted.
Operating a commercial vehicle while under an OOS Order is considered a “major offense” under FMCSA regulations and generally leads to a one-year driver disqualification from transporting interstate cargo.
What’s more, convictions related to these violations will remain on the driver's PSP record for up to 36 months.
Brake Safety Week and the New CSA Focus
Recent FMCSA changes place greater emphasis on safety-related conduct and vehicle maintenance concerns.
During Brake Safety Week, inspectors will closely review:
• Brake components and adjustments
• Air brake leaks and defects
• Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIRs)
• Maintenance documentation
• Driver-observed defects
The revised CSA and SMS changes mean an OOS Order and serious or major offenses lead to an assessment of two CSA severity points that will impact the carrier’s SMS percentile for one year.
Under the recent changes, two CSA points is the maximum, all others are assessed one point. While as of this date we are still waiting for the revised rules to be implemented, we expect they will be soon.
Consistent pre-trip and post-trip inspections using the DVIR might help reduce the likelihood of receiving CVSA inspection violations during roadside inspections.
What’s more, driver-identified shortcomings annotated on the DVIR, which must be maintained for seven days, could nullify a roadside inspection violation.
Why Commercial Drivers Should Pay More Attention to Maintenance Before Brake Safety Week
Truckee sits along a critical freight corridor connecting Northern California, Nevada, and points East. Commercial traffic moving through Donner Pass on I-80 near the Truckee CVEF encounters frequent inspection activity throughout the year.
Because Nevada County courts handle many of these cases, drivers often discover that the long-term FMCSA consequences can be far more costly than the original fine.
Whether the issue involves brake defects, maintenance concerns, or another commercial traffic violation discovered during an inspection, understanding the potential impact is important before resolving the citation.
