If certain lawmakers have their way, there will soon be additional driving
restrictions in Shafter and Lamont.
The State Assembly recently passed
Senate Bill 350, which requires Californians to reduce their petroleum intake by 50 percent
by 2030. To meet this goal, the measure gives broad authority to the California
Air Resources Board to implement almost any rules it deems necessary and
proper to reduce petroleum intake. According to the California Drivers’
Association, S.B. 350 may lead to gasoline rationing, high taxes at the
pump, and in-vehicle electronic devices that monitor fuel consumption
and driving habits. The Legislature could pass fines and other punitive
measures as well. A related provision concerns possible state subsidies
to lower the cost of electric vehicles; the proposal is silent as to where
this money would come from.
Governor Brown will probably consider the Clean Energy and Pollution Reduction
Act of 2015 before the end of the year.
Driving restrictions are already in place, at least in an indirect way.
The state will take action to suspend or revoke your driving privileges
in several different ways:
Direct Suspension: Some violations, like 100+mph speeding, can carry a suspension.
Points Suspension: Too many points against your license (two in two years, four in four
years, or six in six years) will result in a NOTS suspension hearing,
at which the state may take away your license for several months or even longer.
Medical Suspension: Almost any medical disorder that could result in a loss of consciousness,
such as epilepsy or heart disease, triggers a medical suspension hearing.
An attorney who knows the system and knows how to prepare these cases has
an excellent chance of getting the suspension either thrown out or reduced
at all these levels.
